Borouge International Inaugurates Specialty Compound Plant In Austria And Strengthens European Supply Of Advanced And Circular Polypropylene

Borouge International today announced that it has started commercial operation of its specialty polypropylene compounding facility in Schwechat, Austria. The start-up follows an investment of more than €100M to expand and upgrade the site.

The new facility further strengthens Borouge International’s manufacturing footprint in Europe, helping ensure a reliable supply of advanced compounds for customers across the region. The investment supports regional economic growth and reinforces Austria's position as a strategic location for advanced industrial production, while enhancing Schwechat's role as a key hub for innovation, manufacturing excellence and customer collaboration.

Borouge International Executive Board members Roger Kearns, Chief Executive Officer; Dr Hasan Karam, Chief Operating Officer; and Roland Janssen, Chief Commercial Officer, marked the opening of the new facility in the presence of Dr Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austria’s Federal Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism, and Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Governor of Lower Austria.

At the new facility, polypropylene resins are compounded with recycled polypropylene and performance-enhancing additives to create tailored material solutions that combine lightweight design, optimized performance and increased circularity.

The expansion increases the availability of specialty compounds for key growth sectors, including:

• Appliances, Structured Products and household applications, where high-performance materials with recycled content help manufacturers respond to growing market demand.
• Mobility, where more circular materials help car manufacturers meet the requirements of the European End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation. Lightweight polypropylene compounds also help reduce the overall weight of battery electric vehicles and contribute to a lower environmental impact.
• Infrastructure, where specialty compounds are used in protective coating solutions for steel pipes transporting oil and gas at high temperatures. These materials help provide corrosion resistance and long-term performance in demanding operating environments.
