Air Products' engineering expertise is geared towards producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide (HyCO) and syngas in the most cost effective and reliable manner. Air Products owns and operates over 50 HyCO production recovery facilities around the world, including steam reforming, auto-thermal reforming, oxygen secondary reforming and partial oxidation. The optimal facility is chosen dependent on the customers carbon monoxide or syngas hydrogen: carbon monoxide ratio requirements. These plants are located in areas of high petrochemical (and frequently high refining) activity such as: Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Texas and Louisiana, Gulf Coast; Jurong Island, Singapore and Camaçari, Brazil.

Purified carbon monoxide may be recovered by a dry adsorption process – Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA), which preferentially separates carbon monoxide from hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen impurities. The system eliminates the need for a separate carbon dioxide removal system. Carbon monoxide at purities greater than 99.5% can be produced in a single step. The product carbon monoxide is suitable for use in the production of isocyanate intermediates, acetic acid, oxo-alcohols, and specialty chemicals.
