Eletrobras Signs Two New Memorandums, With The European Group And The Government Of Ceará, For The Production Of Renewable Hydrogen In Brazil

Eletrobras, the largest electricity company in Latin America, this week formalized two new Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), during World Hydrogen 2024, in Rotterdam.

Continuing to study opportunities related to renewable hydrogen (H2R) and derivatives production projects, the Company signed an MoU with Green Energy Park (GEP) to evaluate H2R production opportunities at competitive prices, accelerating the energy transition.

Eletrobras also formalized an agreement with the government of Ceará for the supply of renewable energy, promoting the decarbonization of the economy and promoting the low-carbon hydrogen production chain in future industrial projects in the State.

“Eletrobras continues to offer innovative solutions for the electricity sector as a way of promoting the energy transition process, always aiming for a more sustainable future. As leaders in the generation and transmission of electrical energy in the country, we must contribute not only to improving the Brazilian matrix, but the world, so that sources are increasingly clean and renewable. By establishing these partnerships, we are aligned with the strategy of contributing to the decarbonization of the economy and energy security”, stated the president of Eletrobras, Ivan Monteiro.

The signing ceremony was attended by the vice-president of Commercialization and Energy Solutions at Eletrobras, Ítalo Freitas, and the executive vice-president of strategy and business development, Elio Wolff.

MoU Eletrobras and Green Energy Park
The partnership between Eletrobras and Green Energy Park aims to contribute to the production of renewable hydrogen (H2R) and derivatives at competitive prices to boost the green economy and energy security, marking the leading role of the two companies in changes in the Brazilian and global energy matrix.

“We are extremely proud to announce this significant milestone in our journey to build a strong coalition to achieve our climate goals,” highlighted Green Energy Park CEO Bart Biebuyck. “Renewable electricity is the basis of our green hydrogen production process, and we are very pleased to establish the partnership with Eletrobras, a company that stands out as a dominant player in Brazil's energy infrastructure. Together, we look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will have on our efforts to build and accelerate the green hydrogen economy in Brazil and around the world,” he added.

The collaboration between GEP and Eletrobras will combine resources of more than 10 Gigawatts, available for renewable hydrogen production at Eletrobras, with a unique hydrogen and derivatives production platform, designed and implemented by Green Energy Park.

MoU Eletrobras and government of Ceará
The memorandum signed between Eletrobras and the government of Ceará aims to develop energy transition projects, decarbonize the economy and promote the low-carbon hydrogen hub in the State, stimulating the production chain in the region.

The agreement provides for the supply of renewable energy and green hydrogen to future industrial projects in Ceará, as well as the search for solutions for the flow of electricity where electro-intensive projects are being developed.

“The government of Ceará congratulates Eletrobras’ important decision to intend to invest in the production of green hydrogen in Ceará. This decision will allow more employment and income opportunities for our population and a direct contribution to the search for a more sustainable world.” says Governor Elmano de Freitas, who participated in the memorandum signing ceremony.

With a different geographic location, the State of Ceará stands out in the generation of electrical energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar. Furthermore, the state, through the Green Hydrogen HUB, in the Pecém Complex, encourages business opportunities with the supply of renewable energy.

Renewable Hydrogen: more Eletrobras initiatives
Renewable hydrogen is emerging as one of the most promising solutions for the energy transition process. Eletrobras, at the forefront of this movement, has already signed two other Memorandums of Understanding this year for the development of H2R.

In April, the Company signed an MoU with the government of Maranhão for the supply of renewable energy in the low-carbon hydrogen production chain in future industrial projects in the State with support from the local government. In March, Eletrobras also signed a Memorandum with the Brazilian arm of Paul Wurth, from Luxembourg, for a partnership in the market for the production and use of renewable hydrogen in industrial processes.

At the end of last year, the renewable hydrogen plant at the Itumbiara hydroelectric plant, operated by Eletrobras Furnas, on the border of the States of Minas Gerais and Goiás, obtained the first Brazilian renewable hydrogen certification from the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) . Accumulated production reached the end of 2023 totaling two tons.

Currently, three projects are being developed in Itumbiara: one that studies new technologies for hydrogen production; another relating to operation and maintenance, involving workforce training; and also the battery storage project.
