The thickeners are stainless steel, have no moving parts, and require no chemicals. Most sludges settle into stratified layers when not agitated. Waters will migrate to an area of lower head. The thickener consists of a screened well along the vertical dimension of the holding tank. When sludge has stratified, water from the well is extracted via gravity or auxiliary pumping. This causes a reduction in the well head and the layers of water between the sludge flow off through the screen in response.
