PI-ControlMonitor (Client)

OSI Software, Inc.ol to Increase Control Utilization PI-ControlMonitor is a PC based client application for PI designed to assist operations personnel to increase utilization of their control system. It relies on four basic measurements that every control loop has: measured value, setpoint, valve output, and on/off control flag.

How It Is Used
The idea is to look at the plant as being divided up into individual unit operations. Each unit operation will have a quality measurement of some type. For a digester unit in pulp and paper, that measurement might be Kappa number. For a bleach plant, it might be brightness. For an effluent plant, it might be Total Suspended Solids. Each unit operation would also have several control loops that are important in the control of that unit. Theoretically, if the control loops are running well, then the quality variable mentioned above should be controlled as well.

PI-ControlMonitor will display the quality variable as a dependent variable, and the control loops as independent variables. Process Control Monitor will show a trend (run chart) of the quality variable, and a histogram for quality as well. PI-ControlMonitor shows several statistical measurements about the control loops. The unit manager, process operator, or instrument technician can scan this display to see how the control is doing now, last month, and last year. The quality statistics can also be compared with similar processes at other locations.
