Power2X Appoints KBR As Project Management Consultant For eFuels Rotterdam
Power2X today announced the appointment of KBR as Project Management Consultant (PMC) for its eFuels project in Rotterdam. The project will deliver more than 250,000 tonnes per year of e-SAF and will be a significant, multi-billion new industrial investment in the heart of the Rotterdam petrochemical cluster with onsite storage, handling and blending delivered by strategic partner Advario. The project is located at the former Alchemy site, in the heart of ‘Botlek’ in the Port of Rotterdam.
KBR will support the project with project management across the upcoming FEED and execution phases. The scope covers cost, schedule, quality and safety as well as being the Owner's Engineer. KBR joining the project marks a significant further step towards strengthening the delivery capability.
eFuels Rotterdam will produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) from eMethanol that is produced using green hydrogen sourced from locations with competitive renewable power economics. The facility will be a significant step towards demonstrating that Europe can reduce its dependency on fossil jet fuel while greening its aviation sector. The project will be the largest such facility in Europe, delivering a significant share of the ReFuelEU blending mandates in the first phase (2030 - 2032).
This first step towards industrial scale and the use of low-cost green feedstock is important to demonstrate that we can make strides towards reducing the cost of new fuels and making them affordable for the long term.
“Bringing KBR into eFuels Rotterdam marks a significant step and the start of a new phase, going into more detailed engineering and the final planning stages,” said Occo Roelofsen, Founder and CEO of Power2X. “KBR’s long track record and deep experience in managing and delivering large, complex, industrial projects across the globe gives us the confidence that we are setting eFuels Rotterdam up for success. We are also in the process of selecting a partner for the critical Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) work, and together with KBR, we are excited about preparing ourselves for this next phase before reaching an investment decision. EU mandates are providing a clear market demand, and we are working closely with our customers to meet their needs.”
“KBR is proud to support Power2X on the eFuels Rotterdam project, a landmark initiative advancing sustainable aviation fuel production in Europe,” said Jay Ibrahim, President, KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions. “With decades of experience delivering complex industrial projects, we are committed to applying our integrated project delivery and technical expertise to help execute this facility safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, supporting Europe’s clean aviation ambitions.”
